Chip shops

Article Abstract:

Research into the UK casino industry found about 46% of adults questioned had not visited a casino. Many of the UK operators are looking to expand overseas. They are affected by legislation which restricts advertising in the UK. Food and drink sales at casinos are not very profitable because for those people gambling large amounts food and drink is free. It is anticipated just below 12 million people will have visited a casino in 1998. Net spending by visitors to casinos is expected to have reached 545 million pounds sterling by the end of 1998.

Still mineral water is more popular than any other type, according to 1995 figures. Retail outlets sell more sports drinks and mineral water than other resellers including pubs and restaurants.

Competitive edge

Article Abstract:

The market research company Mintel's latest report entitled Leisure Centres and Swimming Pools claims that local authority facilities are poorly attended due to inadequate funding and private sector competition. Annual membership programmes are more popular than ad-hoc attendance. Government health policy has not succeeded in stimulating leisure centre use. More than 50% British adults do not frequent leisure centres.
