The United Kingdom Labour government's White Paper entitled Fairness at Work defines fairness in the workplace and has far-reaching implications for the leisure industry. It proposes to stipulate conditions in which trade unions are established within businesses of over 20 employees and defines union membership criteria. The leisure industry should pay particular attention to the White Paper since it has no trade unions.

The government has a committment to deregulation and the enabling legislation of the Deregulation and Contracting Out Act is seen as progress. It is a struggle to raise the profile of the leisure industry with central government, and sponsoring government departments must satisfy certain criteria, with proposals for the burden to be reduced, retaining protection, and cost savings.

Article Abstract:

Issues are discussed concerning the campaign to change the alcohol laws so that alcohol can be sold after 10.30pm at night on a Sunday in the United Kingdom. The law has been changed so that dancing can take place until late on a Sunday night but you cannot purchase alcohol.
