Inertia effect

Article Abstract:

The continuing trend in businesses towards downsizing has left remaining staff with a defensive attitude towards their own positions and an unwillingness to be open about their own areas of work. They will also try to hide any errors they make for fear of the possible consequences. Such actions show the need for managers to develop high levels of trust within their companies and to encourage risk taking. If those who take risks are punished for possible mistakes, they will be afraid to ever take risks again and the organisation may lose valuable opportunities to progress.

The bootstrap principle

All employees of an organisation must bear the responsibility for ensuring that high working standards are maintained. They must work together towards developing and maintaining a positive working environment and towards boosting employee motivation. The 'Bootstrap Principle' recognised the importance of collective action, but also emphasises that motivation must come from within each individual employee.
