The hotel and entertainment industry of Las Vegas, NV, has altered and expanded the public's expectations of theme parks by creating a town within a theme park, where hotels and attractions are part of a whole experience. Much of the entertainment in Las Vegas is funded by the American gaming industry which is valued at $50 billion. The Mirage Hotel was opened in 1989 at a cost of $620 million, providing lavish entertainment with volcanoes and pirates. Other companies, including Iwerks Entertainment Inc and Showscan Entertainment Inc, are entering the market. One of the reasons for exhibitors' interest in this format is that a large format theatre generates up to ten times the audience of a mainstream cinema screen.
