Lottery bonanza

Article Abstract:

National lotteries are a potential source of finance for arts and recreation projects. About 110 countries raised over 38 billion pounds sterling in 1991. European countries accounted for 15 billion pounds. Success is attributable to effective marketing, innovative products and consumer confidence. Approximately 50% of adults participate weekly. Sales in Scandinavia total over 1.9 billion pounds per annum. The Irish lottery has raised 335 million pounds since 1987. About 3,500 retail outlets ensure widespread ticket availability.

Labour sets out its ideas for the lottery

Article Abstract:

The UK Labour party would not necessarily replace Camelot, which currently operates the lottery, with a not-for-profit organisation if it wins the next general election, according to a recent report. However, it does believe that Camelot's profits should be limited. The party plans to select the company which can offer the most price competitive and efficient service. It would use some lottery money to fund front-line programmes, an approach which has been criticised by the Conservative party.
