The UK hospitality industry has been very badly affected in 2001 by the outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease and by the aftermath of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. However, businesses are making significant efforts to attract customers, and the industry is showing that it can survive and flourish.

The impact of the 2000 foot and mouth outbreak in the United Kingdom has been far greater than the 1967 outbreak. The tourist industry has suffered from misinformation presented to a global audience, resulting in even non-infected areas losing trade.
