Rooms to manoeuvre

Article Abstract:

Increased awareness in consumer satisfaction through staff training and high delivery standards was emphasized to delegates who attended the International Hotel Investment Forum in Berlin during March 1999. The European hotel market has room to continue growing through 2000, with the brand market still a long way below levels in the US. The number of privately owned hotels in Europe is very high, with plenty of investment opportunities for international chains seeking to develop branding.

No dice

Article Abstract:

The would-be resort town of Sanya on China's Hainan Island still hopes to attract international high-rollers, but Beijing's continued disapproval of gambling is keeping it in the doldrums. In 1993 govt officials on junkets swarmed, and easy credit led to the start of construction for a slew of hotels and other amenities. Now the area and its main feature, an Electronic Emjoyment Center featuring gambling on toy boat races, seem run down. A Club Med venture may help boost its fortunes.
