Segmenting markets by travel expenditure patterns: The case of international visitors to Australia

Article Abstract:

The issue of segmenting markets according to drivers of travel expenses is addressed with respect to the case of international visitors to Australia and modeled by means of log-linear regression, based on the characteristics of the trip, the reason for travel and influences to visit Australia. Results reveal that visitors from mature markets, mostly European, spend 20% to 30% less than those from less mature markets, mostly Asian, and visits to rural areas like the outback lead to more spending, while beach holidays lead to less spending.
