Shopping list for air liberalisation

Article Abstract:

The CEO and Chmn of American Airlines, Robert Crandall, has warned European Union, tourism and aviation industry representatives that an open market in Europe is crucial for the future success of its air transportation. Crandall said that changes are necessary because not enough investment has gone into the upgrading of existing airport facilities, and that little planning has been done for further capacity. Crandall also blaimed state aids, monopolies and lack of open skies agreements for the slow progress towards liberalisation.

Inside Europe: weak carriers will go to the wall

Article Abstract:

A recent survey has predicted that by the year 2005 the number of European airlines will be reduced significantly as a result of increased competition, restrictions on state aid, and easier access to routes. The SH&E Associates report, which studies the effects of deregulation, suggests that market leaders British Airways, KLM, and Lufthansa are expected to play a significant role in the development of the future market.

EU to shake up Nordic aviation

Article Abstract:

Nordic air transport is facing a new European Commission investigation into EU aviation liberalisation and deregulation. The investigation will use a UK civil aviation authority report which indicates that fares on Nordic routes have increased considerably since January 1993. Nordic airlines have said that foreign airlines are welcome to enter the market but no new airlines have shown interest.
