Social work

Article Abstract:

The UK government includes leisure as one of the solutions to the problem of social exclusion, currently being studied by its Social Exclusion Unit. The government is trying to address this problem with a new rounded approach for young people rather than a series of separate policies. Any leisure scheme which is set up to address social exclusion will be part of an integrated package which might include schemes to address educational achievement, crime involvement or housing problems. A scheme developed in Slough to offer sport to excluded pupils presents an example of the integrated approach.

Club operators and children

Article Abstract:

Strict regulation of creche facilities may threaten leisure operators' child care facilities. A creche must be registered with the local authority even if provision is for less than two hours. Registration depends on premises standards and staff expertise. A creche is vital to off-peak use of facilities but some operators may not be able to finance improvements.
