Operators and developers debated the issues surrounding mixed leisure and retail developments at a conference held in London, England, in Mar 1999. Some speakers quoted research which showed that customers appreciate the opportunity to combine shopping with a leisure experience. Others proclaimed the suitability of the mix for an age where customers have a lot of money but little time. Some speakers doubted whether fitness centres were compatible with retailing, and many speakers emphasized the importance of the right mix of tenants and a good location.

There is a strong synergy between the bingo and casino business, according to Rank Gaming Sector Managing Director David Boden. He believes that having four groups within Rank Group's Leisure and Entertainment business is a positive move. He believes that, in the medium to long term, the bingo market will expand by between 1% and 2% a year. He aims to make Mecca Bingo Ltd, which with Grosvenor Casinos makes up Rank Gaming Sector, the largest operator in the UK.
