Switzerland

Article Abstract:

Switzerland is one of the world's oldest tourist destinations but a major restructuring aims to position it as a 'young' destination, with increased emphasis on activity holidays, such as walking and skiing. Switzerland's tourist industry in 1999 has been hampered by the high exchange rate, Asia's economic crisis and inconsistent weather. It is expected that the next five years will show an improvement in visitor numbers but the winter tourist market is expected to be threatened by the impact of global warming.

Uruguay

Article Abstract:

Uruguay had more than 2.3 million visitors in 1998, placing it as the second most popular tourist destination in South America after Argentina. Visitor arrivals between 1988 and 1998 grew by 124%, represented an average yearly growth rate of 12.4%. The growth of the sector has been helped by the government's major investments in transport infrastructure and marketing campaigns. The future for Uruguay's tourism industry looks positive, although most growth will come from the markets in Argentina and Brazil.
