The way ahead

Article Abstract:

The UK leisure industry faces a number of significant challenges. Most importantly, it must convince investors that leisure activities have become a key element of many people's lifestyle. A number of trends are fuelling the growth of the leisure industry, which now employs 2.5 million people. These include the fact that young people are increasingly conscious about style and about their health, while older people have more money to spend. Leisure expansion is also being fuelled by the fact that women are earning more money and are making their needs known more clearly.

Keeping us in suspense

Article Abstract:

There is increasingly fierce competition between cinema operators in the UK. The number of cinema screens has increased by 85% since 1988, with cinema admissions rising 73%. However, cinema admissions dropped in 1998, possibly because no major films were released. It is anticipated that admissions will reach 150 million in 1999, prompting the opening of more multiplex facilities. Property agents anticipate that both out-of-town and city centre cinema developments will be able to adapt to new market conditions.
