VAT and sport

Article Abstract:

The UK government has operated a system of non-taxation of non-profit making organisations which provide sport facilities since 1978, although many question the definition of non-profit making when a business is concerned. The UK makes the largest provision of local authority provided sports facilities in Europe, which has been criticised by member states for being unfair due to the lack of taxation charged. Many sports clubs claim the introduction of VAT taxation would prevent them carrying out socially beneficial work with young people.

Paying the rates

Article Abstract:

UK leisure operators face a potentially drastic rise in the level of property rates paid on their premises as a review of the country's valuation scheme is expected at the beginning of April 2000. Rate values were last reviewed in April 1998 and business leaders are calling for the government to think hard about the increases expected to come in the April 2000 review. The leisure industry tends to operate out of large buildings and rate increases could dramatically affect profits in a fast growing industry.
