Article Abstract:

The first holiday centre to open in the UK was Butlin's at Skegness in 1936. Butlin's went on to open a further five centres, and eventually became part of the Rank Group. These centres have a busy seaside holiday atmosphere and are aimed at lower socio-economic groups. Dutch Center Parcs introduced a different kind of holiday centre concept in the mid 1980s with holiday centres set in tranquil, wooded countryside, and offering short, quality breaks with sporting activities. Rank Group developed a similar concept in its Oasis Forest Holiday Villages, the first of which will open in 1997.

Capitalise then rationalise - which sector is next?

Article Abstract:

Some areas of the UK leisure industry have been experiencing increasing growth which is likely to only continue for the largest firms, as they buy out their smaller competitors. Competition in the multiplex market has been intense and it is feared the number of sites may outgrow the needs of the market. A number of the new health club operations will not survive as rents have risen, for some sites, to more than 9-10 pounds sterling per sq ft from 3-4 pounds sterling per sq ft. Some bingo operations have been taken over as they suffered from saturation of the market and high rents.

The nightclub debate

Article Abstract:

Nightclubs are often better placed at an out of town site where town residents will not be disturbed by late opening hours. Nightclubs normally require between 10,000 and 20,000 square feet of space. Space requirements vary according to customer numbers. Operators should put on a variety of entertainment such as live cabaret and theme restaurants to attract regular customers throughout the week.
