A short history of a tragedy

Article Abstract:

Twenty million people died worldwide in the influenza epidemic of 1918-1919. The epidemic is the greatest human disaster in Alaska's history. Thousands of Alaskans died, leaving as many as 500 children without parents. The disease could progress from a case of sniffles through pneumonia resulting in death within only 48 hours. The fatal germs were delivered to Alaska by steamships which also brought the necessities of life to the area.
