A visitor, who has trained as an environmental ranger in South Africa, describes the experience. The end of apartheid in South Africa has brought about a rapid increase in tourism, and rangers are needed to provide services for the tourists in the bush areas. Such areas have become melting pots as people of all races train for a career in the country's game parks.

A week-long trip to Umbria, Italy is presented. The best way to understand local life is to rent a villa. Once settled, neighbors often invite the foreigner to dinner. There are often local parties where most of the village comes out to eat together.
