The financial crisis faced by many big United States airlines could adversely affect the customers as they may have to pay higher prices for their tickets and passengers traveling on the less profitable routes may be faced with scarcity of tickets to their destinations. Analysts predict that this financial crisis may result in many airlines going out of business or merging with their rivals.

The key to finding an airfare from the U.S. to Europe that is good value is to look at less popular airlines, the internet or consolidators and to choose a different airport or low-fare carrier. In 2000, supply and demand for tickets should be more balanced than in other years so it is important to be flexible and persistent.

The case against Alaska Airlines filed by lawyer Lem Howell regarding the airline's refund policies has opened consumer awareness. Alaska Airlines refused to refund the $4000-worth of tickets Howell bought in advance and demanded additional fees or future use of the tickets.
