Maestro on a mission: by bringing Israeli and Arab musicians together for two concerts this month, Daniel Barenboim strikes a chord for peace

Article Abstract:

The third concert-series of Barenboim's project, the West-Eastern Divan Workshop for Young Musicians, will take place in July, 2001 in Chicago. Close to 100 musicians, ranging from 16 to 24 years of age and including Israelis and Arabs of many nationalities, such as Lebanese, Jordanians, Syrians and Egyptians, will participate in the concerts.

Safe Harbor: a Chicago group argues that oppressed gays and lesbians deserve asylum in the United States

Article Abstract:

The US did not make persecution based on sexual orientation grounds for asylum until 1994. Activists say gays and lesbians in many cultures face institutionalized discrimination that can cost them their lives should they be afflicted with AIDS.
