Making mindful managers: evaluating methods for teaching problem solving skills for tourism management

Article Abstract:

Methods for teaching problem-solving skills for tourism management have been evaluated. Ellen Langer's work on mindfulness training at Harvard University has led to a definition of mindfulness as the active processing of information to create new categories, new definitions of situations, new routines for behavior and flexible, effective problem solutions. Effectiveness of a series of exercises meant to create mindful approaches to tourism decision making was studied. The exercises were successful in bringing about more flexible thinking on various tourism management problems.

A critical review of readability and comprehensibility tests

Article Abstract:

Interpretive labels and signs rely on readability and comprehensibility for their effectiveness. Tourist site managers should examine interpretive materials for length and size, placement, layout, organization of information and language complexity. Managers should also directly ask for reader input so that improvements can be made that address visitors' needs specifically.

Interpretation and sustainable tourism: functions, examples and principles

Article Abstract:

Interpretation is an integral component of creating sustainable tourism. By providing information to travelers about the history and relevance of sites and events, tourism agencies can promote excitement, fascination, curiosity, and appreciation. These responses in turn create a sense of obligation in travelers to care for the places they visit.
