Menhaden netters threaten Chesapeake: Industrial scale netting in Chesapeake Bay is reducing numbers of these critical food fish and living water filters

Article Abstract:

The processing of menhaden into livestock meal and other products by Omega Protein reduction plant in Reedville, Virginia is under controversy as the menhaden, the little fish, is a critical source of food for a variety of fish and wildlife in Chesapeake Bay as well as the entire coast. Up to half the stripers in the Bay are infected with myobacteria, a chronic "wasting" disease that attacks an animal's organs and can be fatal, mostly caused by the degenerating ecosystem.

Little fish, big problem

The catching of larger fishes can affect the sustainability of fishes and fisheries, according to two papers presented by David O. Conover and Steve Berkley, at Marine Fish Conservation Network's annual conference in 2005. Larger fishes have the capability to produce more number of eggs while at the same time, while their larva have quicker growth rate than those of the young ones.
