Thomas Trantino has served 38 years in prison, the longest for any New Jersey convict, for the murder of two Lodi policemen in 1963 and claims that he has done penance in prison and calls himself an artist, peace activist and thinker. However, people affected by the deaths of their beloved believe that two whole families were figuratively killed that day, and warn that Trantino is not a changed man, but dangerous and manipulative and loves the celebrity status the attention has brought him.

The experiences, facilities offered and the quality of education in schools representing the extremes of public education in New Jersey are described. One school educates mostly children of immigrants, while another educates children of mostly blue-collar workers in the area, whose families have lived there for generations.
