Article Abstract:

Biologists and Inupiaq whalers in Alaska have been working together since the 1970s to accurately assess the number of bowhead whales in Arctic waters, thereby enabling the Inupiaq to continue their traditional bowhead harvest. Early research by scientists which appeared to show that the population of bowheads was dangerously low threatened the Inupiaq harvest, so they decided to work together with researchers and use their knowledge to prove that bowhead numbers were much higher than researchers thought.
