No more free lunch

Article Abstract:

The travel agency industry is undergoing major changes attributable to airlines' reductions in compensation for agents. Travelers may have to pay fees for services that were free in the past. Some agencies want to focus on the more lucrative side of their business by handling only cruise and tour packages. One solution for travelers is to seek reduced service fees in exchange for doing a particular level of business with a designated travel agent.

Travel agent woes on us: the impact of commission caps

Article Abstract:

The recent decision by airlines to reduce again the commissions they pay to travel agents will result in higher costs to consumers. Agents will likely charge more fees and push tour packages, and ticket consolidators will enjoy greater popularity due to the inexpensive ticket prices they offer. The airlines expect to save tens of millions of dollars with the new changes to commissions.
