O, dear

Article Abstract:

Critics during Oprah Winfrey's first 'Book Club' incarnation from September 1996 to April 2002 observed that her choices of contemporary novels that told stories of bad relationships were relentlessly harsh. After reinventing her Book Club in the summer of 2003 with special focus on classics, questions are raised whether she would succeed in shaping readers' tastes and whether her selections would be good introductions to great literature.
