Playing for keeps

Article Abstract:

Five days a week a group of widowers and retirees gather around three worn pool tables in a South Shore recreation room to trade gossip and insults to one another. Though they are old and their bodies are breaking down they feel that the few hours they spend together heal their body and soul better than any medicines, which is certainly it is better than sitting along at home.

Barbara Hermansen found happiness and fulfillment as a North Shore wife, mother, and lawyer until she started taking a prescription drug for neurological malady called restless leg syndrome, which affects up to 12 million Americans. The drug completely changed her life and made her a liar, a gambler and she even attempted suicide.
