Specter subcommittee issues Ruby Ridge report

Article Abstract:

The Senate Subcommittee on Terrorism, Narcotics and International Operations investigated the armed assault by Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms agents on the Weaver family cabin in Ruby Ridge Idaho. The committee concluded that several errors by agents led to needless deaths.

FBI agent Herbert Byerly fell under intense scrutiny during the Senate hearing on the Ruby Ridge incident. The focal point of Byerly's cross-examination was a letter he sent which falsely accused Randy Weaver of participating in several bank robberies.

The Senate conducted an investigation on the Ruby Ridge incident, which occurred in Aug. 1992. The investigation spurred stirring questions over federal law enforcement practices.
