The last spear hunt

Article Abstract:

The Koyukon Indians of Alaska were experts in using spears to hunt grizzly bears. The tradition was last practiced in 1917, when the chief of the Koyukans organized a hunt in the winter. Bears were lured out of their dens and attacked directly with spears as a test of manhood.

An Alaskan native narrates how he almost got himself married to a 12-year-old girl when he was just 13. He recalls that at this age, he killed his first grizzly bear that made him worthy to get a woman to live with according to the the Indian tradition.

The US Navy is set to vacate its facility on Adak Island by 1997. The Alaskan government is hurriedly considering ways of converting the facility. One proposal is to convert the base into a business and residential district.
