The eight men and women honored for their good works have varied roles. They include Connie E. Evans, head of a woman's self-improvement project, Donald L. Sharp, founder of a housing corporation, and Guadalupe Reyes who spearheaded a tuition-free school for children with multiple disabilities.

When Royko died in 1997 he was one of the most beloved as well as most reviled journalists in Chicago. But his use of ethnic humor was balanced by his championing of the underdog in his 30 years of newspaper work. His early life, personality, columns, critics, and his family are all discussed.
