When a giant awakens

Article Abstract:

Residents of Anchorage, AK, now watch Mount Spurr more closely after a series of volcanic eruptions took place. The first eruption spewed ashes in the air in Jun 1992. In Aug 1992, the second eruption closed four airports and engulfed the city in an ash-dark cloud.

Biologist Steve Amstrup is paid by oil companies to keep track of Alaska's polar bear population. The research costs $3,500 a day, so his work is limited. He tags bears, tracks them and estimated the total Alaska population at over 3,000.
