Totem projects provide boost in Southeast

Article Abstract:

The different ways in which the Saxman's legendary Totem Row has raised their reputation in Southeast Alaska reflecting the community effort and cultural experience for many of the residents are presented. The restoration project in Saxman is part of a state-funded effort to clean, repaint and add a protective sealant to poles that have suffered significant from wind, weather and age.

The insider's passage: The Marine highway might be the ultimate way to see southeast Alaska

The Alaska Marine Highway System stretches across Prince William Sound to Seward, and west from Seward along the Aleutian Chain, where the Inland Passage is the system's most popular route. In 2002, more than 314,000 passengers used the ferry system, and 90 percent traveled only the Inside Passage.

The cross and the totem

Article Abstract:

Conflicts have arisen among the Kake Indians and other native groups in Alaska over how to reconcile the native traditions of the group with their conversion to Christianity. Some churches which advocated destroying native materials are now accepting Indian heritage.
