Article Abstract:

Ports along the Pacific coast, together with cruise lines, have developed several ways for cruise ships to conserve enery and reduce diesel emissions. Princess Cruises in 2001 started using shore power, also known as "cold ironing", wherein ships at dock turn off their diesel engines and connect to local electric power. Other environmental practices of cruise ships and ports are also discussed.
