A crucial period: missing menstruation from too much exercise can have serious consequences

Article Abstract:

A certain amount of body fat, calories and protein is needed for women to maintain menstruation. Exercise-associated amenorrhea is a condition brought about by an excessive amount of exercise and marked by the cessation of menstruation. Diagnosis and treatment are discussed.

What's going on in there? The physiological effects of exercise

Regular exercise brings about a number of physiological changes in the body. The heart adapts differently for aerobic exercise and for weight training. Exercise-caused changes in the heart, circulatory system and muscles are discussed.

Exercise often results in pain, but it is important to recognize the difference between the pain caused by muscle strengthening and that caused by injury. Tips to help distinguish between the two types of pain are discussed.
