A new voice for psychology

Article Abstract:

Carol Gilligan felt that clinical psychology inadequately described human lives, so she left the field and got deeply involved in civil rights and the arts. This background helped her correlate her life with her work. She saw that women's realities and sense of self do not connect with male theories in psychology. This resulted in 'In a Different Voice,' which questions the male canon on women's psychological make up and presents an alternative, one that uses women's voices. A study of girls' psychological development shows the dissociation of women from their earlier experience. Both books inform present feminist psychoanalysis.

On being a feminist and a psychotherapist

Article Abstract:

Feminism came first before psychotherapy for a Boston psychotherapist. In 1969, consciousness-raising made women not only aware of but also began to name their realities. This linking with women breaking barriers of silence was an experience in empowerment, which led to a study on women and psychotherapy. The findings were published under the title 'A New Approach to Women and Therapy.' A recent work looks at therapy on both the political and spiritual level, 'Healing Through the Dark Emotions: The Alchemy of Grief, Fear, Anger and Despair.'

Article Abstract:

Growing up in a social and political milieu which privileged women with the feeling of having intellectual entitlement is an advantage not too many women have. However, these distinct advantages hastened personal and professional growth into a psychiatric profession informed by feminist discourse. The most important finding made from this perspective is on the violation of women's boundaries by men and women therapists. Since this is strongly linked with the concept of power, anti-racism became part of it.
