An unlikely radical

Article Abstract:

A pioneer feminist psychotherapist relates her experiences. She relates how she grew up with an indifferent father and a paranoid mother and how she felt the love of a son from a teenage pregnancy. She developed her self-confidence for the struggles of working, studying and raising a son single-handedly. She also recounts her early practice of feminist therapy and of gathering others in the same profession to form the New York Association of Feminist Therapists.

Learning from women

Article Abstract:

Psychiatrist Jean Baker Miller believes that women must redefine their perception of their own weaknesses into strengths, instead of imitating man's dominant characteristics. Her main contributions to the feminist movement include her writings, particularly the book 'Toward a New Psychology of Women' and her offer of preventive services at the Stone Center. A program that encourages women to reveal more of themselves to therapists is also described.
