Borderline babies

Article Abstract:

Modern medical technology and the introduction of a lubricant called surfactant have made possible the survival of 23-week-old babies. However, all require months of intensive neonatal care and many of them will grow with major handicaps. This situation raises ethical questions.

Irritable bowel syndrome is caused by highly activated nerves in the bowel producing cramps, diarrhea or constipation. Symptoms can be handled by cutting fat intake, spices and stimulants, and increasing fiber in the diet.

Pregnant substance abusers run the risk of giving birth to babies with fetal alcohol syndrome, a disease that damages the brain. Women's right to control their own body should be balanced with parental responsibility.
