Born too soon

Article Abstract:

Physicians are unsure of why some babies are born prematurely, but they do know that women who are less than 17 years old or older than 35 years old and those who receive poor prenatal care are more likely to have a premature infant. Treatments for premature infants are discussed.

Inexperienced gynecologists may choose to use conventional surgical techniques on their patients because they do not feel adequately trained to use lasers or laparoscopic surgery, which usually requires shorter hospital stays and recovery times than conventional surgery.

Gynecological practice has advanced in many ways since the 1960s, but many aspects have remained fairly constant. For example, there are many new techniques and specialties, but the dangers of oral contraceptives for women have not yet been adequately assessed.
