Australia's fashion industry is in a state of chaos. Many women are rejecting fashion, challenging the assumptions on which it is based. Consumers are increasingly resisting efforts by the fashion industry to dictate their appearance, and are questioning fashion's strong messages. There is also growing awareness of the way in which the fashion industry promotes an unrealistic ideal of the extremely thin woman. Women are now actively involved in the process of their own constitution as feminine subjects.
