Countdown to 2000

Article Abstract:

Business owners must prepare themselves for the potential impacts of the Year 2000 problem on their operations, such as their cash flow, inventory, taxes and customer relations. Businesses could heed the four recommended steps to managing the problem, including the need to hire a consultant to scan software packages, check out the year 2000 compliance tests on the Internet, ensure that suppliers are addressing the problem, and upgrade software to make them Y2K compliant. The Small Business Administration itself urges business owners to draft a strategy for addressing the problem.

Employers race for a healthier bottom line

Article Abstract:

The skyrocketing cost of medical care is prompting employers to introduce preventive health and wellness programs. Aside from reducing medical expenses, these initiatives also demonstrate that companies care about the work and life issues confronting their employees. The results of good wellness programs are less frequent sick leave and absences, lower health benefits use, lower workers' compensation and injuries, reduced turnover, better employee loyalty and morale, and improvement job recruiting and retention.

Telecommuting has risen in popularity and has been a major factor in helping recruit and keep women in business. Telecommuting offers advantages of better work environments, better economics, and better quality of lives which are being embraced across some sectors of industry. There are several forms of telecommuting including home-based telecommuting, 'telework center' or 'telecenter' and 'hoteling.'
