Driving out inefficiency

Article Abstract:

The experience of QuickPark Inc shows how management accountants can contribute to their organizations' efforts to increase the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of operations. QuickPark, which manages parking lots in several cities across the US, sought the help of its management accountant in addressing customer complaints regarding the time its cashiers took in processing exiting cars. After studying the problem accountant Martina Daniels recommended several environmental solutions, such as allotting one exit lanes for cash-paying customers, eliminating structural barriers and using only experienced cashiers during peak hours. More importantly, Daniels suggested a switch to new terminals that could speed up the processing of credit card transactions by as much as 10 seconds. In addition to expediting the processing of exiting cars, the new terminals are also expected to save QuickPark nearly $500,000 annually.
