Fragmentation and integrity: the search for a moral compass while working as a therapist within the child welfare system

Author's Abstract: COPYRIGHT 1999 The Howarth Press, Inc. Feminist therapy sensitizes our awareness to what is absent and unvoiced. Youngsters in the Child Welfare system are particularly vulnerable to fragmented and disconnected attempts to conceptualize their difficulties, meet their needs, and make decisions about their future. Unprocessed pain and competing agendas generate moral dilemmas that affect information sharing, placement recommendations or the process of uncovering a more complex truth. Therapist have to select from among the roles of advocate, expert or interpreter. Case examples and creative interpretation of a bibical text are used to delineate a moral stance that counters fragmentation by bringing integrity into awareness and action. In the belly of the beast: morals, ethics, and feminist psychotherapy with women in prison

Author's Abstract: COPYRIGHT 1999 The Howarth Press, Inc. This paper addresses three primary moral and ethical issues faced by feminist therapists working with women in prison: (a) working in a racist and patriarchal institution, (b) conducting therapy in a setting that can be antithetical to the inherent vulnerability and the development of trust involved in the therapeutic relationship, and (c) the therapist's dual allegiance to the institution and the woman seeking therapy. A discussion of ways feminist therapists might morally and ethically work in a penal or other institutional system concludes this paper.
