Doomed by natural disaster

Article Abstract:

Between AD 500 and 600 sand buried the capital of the Moche civilization leading to its abandonment and the decline of the culture. The destruction was apparently due to a series of natural disasters. The El Nino weather phenomenon brings flooding to Peru, washing sediment into the sea; one or two strong El Ninos, perhaps preceded by an earthquake, set the stage for sand dunes to form and move in from the coast. A severe drought probably crippled the Moche people's ability to react to the disaster.
