Money for nothing: a new breed of Internet profiteers is spinning virtual gold into hard currency

Benjamin Schriefer and Michael Gmeinwieser buy property elements at discount prices from people playing the Internet game 'Ultima Online' and then resell them to other players at a profit. Players sell their their game possessions via the Ebay auction site. The two entrepreneurs use both Ebay and their own Web site to trade gold pieces, houses and sites for building castles. Others have entered the trading business, but Schriefer and Gmeinwieser managed a 30% profit in their first six weeks of trades by handling 20 million gold pieces and 10 houses.
