Ivor Noel Hume's archaeological findings in Virginia in 1957 has made him an authority with regards to American colonial life. His 1957 findings has resulted in the unearthing of several remains that are vital in the study of American history during colonial period.

The Tyne and Wear Development Corp began rebuilding the fallen-down area surrounding the Tyne River in 1987. Upscale hotels, factories and other businesses helped to create jobs and increase tourism.
