Packwood resigns

Article Abstract:

Senator Bob Packwood's resignation has brought cheers from all quarters. The Senate Ethics Committee's decision to expel him for sexual misconduct came a few hours before his decision ending a long fight by the National Organization for Women (NOW). Sen Packwood' sanctions became public only after he defeated the NOW-sponsored Les Aucoin by a narrow margin, as he had stalled publication of allegations against him with legal threats. The chair of the Senate Finance Committee has fallen vacant following his resignation.

Fate of poor women on congressional "Chopping Block."

Article Abstract:

National Organization for Women proposes to pressure President Bill Clinton to disapprove welfare programs possessing child exclusion measures or those refusing assistance to legal residents. The proposed Senate bill for ending the guarantee of aid to the poor and passing on the responsibility to the states for social safety has aroused opposition from many quarters. The bill will replace financial help to families with dependent children, with a block grant.
