Revisiting the rule of thumb: an overview of the history of wife abuse

The occurrence of wife abuse within patriarchal societies is chronicled, focusing on the legal and social tolerance of domestic violence as an acceptance practice as females had no independent status. Contemporary efforts at eradicating abuse are also included.
