Speechless in Manhattan: losing your voice tunes you in to the sounds around you

Article Abstract:

A woman who was advised by her doctor not to speak for a week to give her infected vocal cords some rest found the whole experience enriching. During her 'week of silence,' she learned to become more aware of the sounds around her. Now, although she is completely healed and able to speak normally, she still allows complete silence to rule over certain parts of her day.

Women's health symposium draws visitors from around the globe

The National Organization for Women joined with the Women's Institute on Sport and Education and the White House Millennium Council to host the Women's International Symposium on Health. Topics discussed included AIDS, domestic violence, research on women's medical issues, sexual violence and female genital mutilation.

Maj. Bridget Larew, a nurse practitioner, was working on the Pentagon clinic when the Sept 11 attack occurred. The medical staff eventually evacuated the building and set up a triage center on the lawn to provide oxygen and first aid to victims.
