Starting off on the right foot: a heel-to-toe guide to caring for your child's feet

Article Abstract:

Orthopedists recommend that children be allowed to go barefoot, especially before they begin to walk, to allow proper foot development and mobility. Parents should check to make sure their child's shoes fit properly on a regular basis to prevent foot problems. Flexible shoes are recommended.

An adequate intake of calcium and the appropriate exercise will ensure the proper development of a child's bones. The years from infancy to puberty are the most crucial in building strong, healthy bones, so a sufficient amount of calcium in the diet during this period is necessary.

The primary cause of death during childhood is no longer infectious disease, but unintentional injury. Many children suffer from health problems such as asthma, lack of proper immunizations and poor nutrition. Ways of helping children stay healthy are discussed.
