Researchers attending the May 1997 meeting of the American College of Sports Medicine presented many findings of interest to female athletes. New research on sports nutrition, athletic performance, amenorrhea, bone loss, estrogen and flexibility is discussed.

There is anecdotal evidence that childbirth enhances a woman athlete's performance. The popular belief is that blood volume increases greatly in the first trimester of pregnancy, creating more available oxygen in the blood that enhances athletic activity.

Some women athletes experience physical problems when they menstruate. Other athletes receive relief when they exercise during their periods due to the release of endorphins. Maintaining exercise levels throughout the month can also relieve symptoms.
