The fitting room

Article Abstract:

The politics of the body is an inseparable part of feminist agenda. However, for the feminist foremothers, this realization came slowly. It was the issue of rape and the work with rape victims that brought the politics of the body to the fore. The realization resulted in a more radical approach towards violence against women especially in helping them heal emotionally and psychologically. Battered women and rape victims' crisis centers and incest survivors' groups were organized. For those helping in the healing process, feminism is not just an ideology, but a way of life.

Incest: a journey to hullabaloo

Article Abstract:

Incest causes disorders. For one psychologist, it caused feminism. There is a strong link between women's and children's issues and this is clearly seen in the issue regarding incest. The mainstream view of paternal rape is that the rapist is not to be blamed, but rather the mother who failed on two counts: she caused the rape and failed to protect the victim. The 'experts' have also shifted the focus away from the real issue, which is rape and the rapist, by coming up with names and labels for the victim and the mother of the victim.

Bridging feminism and multiculturalism

Article Abstract:

The mid-'70s feminist movement did not know that there was such a thing as multicultural issue. On the part of women of color, they were also unaware of what the movement could offer them. Oliva M. Espin acted as the bridge between the two through her work in her counseling practice and research. At Boston University, she developed a course in cross-cultural counseling and psychotherapy. In 1991, the American Psychological Assn. awarded her a Distinguished Contribution Award for her work with Latinas, African American and Asian women.
